The Volcanic Eruption Helicopter tour barely needs an introduction. Fly by helicopter to the erupting volcano site in the Reykjanes Peninsula, near to the previously erupted Fagradalsfjall volcano. Fly across the desolate, scarred landscape of the Reykjanes Peninsula, and hover over the volcanic area with the chance to see flowing, molten lava!
A new fissure eruption started on the Reykjanes Peninsula northeast of Sýlingarfell on November 21st, 2024, marking the 8th eruption in the area since December 2023.
This area has seen an increase in volcanic activity after an 800-year hiatus, with volcanic eruptions starting in this area in 2021. There have been multiple eruptions here in 2021, 2022 and earlier in 2023. Since December 2023 there have now been multiple eruptions just north of Gríndavik. The area is closed for access on land, but our friends at Atlantsflug can take you there by helicopter.
On this approximate 40 minute tour you are taken on an exhilarating helicopter flight over the Reykjanes Peninsula. Before you know it, you will see the glowing crater and fresh lava from the new volcanic eruption site, near Sýlingarfel, north east of the town of Grindavík. A comfortable 5 seat helicopter offers everyone spectacular views of the volcano on the way.
No walking is required and there is no landing as part of this tour.
This tour has a 4 person minimum to go ahead and is available as private upon request.

The Volcanic Eruption Site
When erupting: From above you will get to witness the volcanic fissure bubbling and spraying lava into the air. Rivers of lava flow like water from the crater. Slow moving lava glows across a large area. Smoke and steam billow out of this newly formed feature.
When not erupting: The lava cools quickly after an eruption ends, meaning you won’t see glowing lava. However, even the cooled black, glistening lava fields are like something from a J R R Tolkien novel. You will often see smoke and steam emanating from the cracks. You will also get incredible views over the previous eruption sites and the extents of the Reykjavík area.
The crater acts differently every time it is visited but one thing is for sure, it will always be a spectacular view from above.
The volcano is a natural wonder and we cannot guarantee visible lava at the time of your tour.
Please note, on this tour you do not land at the volcano site. All views are from the helicopter.
