FROM 35,000 ISK
Vestmannaeyjar, or the Westman Islands, is a volcanic island archipelago only a half hour ferry ride from the south coast of Iceland, just a couple of hours from Reykjavík. The natural beauty and history will astound every-one who visits this stunning collection of islands. Come with us to explore a true gem of Iceland, one that the locals love to explore themselves.
We start the day with a drive to Landeyjahöfn, as we pass through all the astonishing scenery the south coast of Iceland has to offer, including waterfalls, glaciers and volcanoes.
The main island, Heimaey, was almost destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 1973 resulting in a full town evacuation. We will go to the Eldheimar Museum and learn all about how the eruption destroyed hundreds of homes and lasted for months, making it the “Pompei of the North”. Afterwards we will hike to the top of Eldfell crater, which was created in 1973, and gaze over the newest parts of Heimaey, with incredible views back to the mainland.
In summer we will also go to see the huge flocks of puffins that frequent the cliffs of Vestmannaeyjar. It is one of the best places in Iceland to get up close and personal to these incredibly cute birds. We will also eat at one of the highest rated restaurants in Iceland, and one that matches any in Reykjavík. The food at Slippurinn is seasonal and inspired by what is available locally, giving a modern twist to many of Iceland´s favourite dishes.
This trip can be catered especially to you. For those that are more adventurous we can hike to the top of Heimaklettur, the highest point of Vestmannaeyjar, with unbeatable views. For those that prefer a gentler walk, and enjoy golf, Vestmannaeyjar has one of the best courses, being rated within the top 200 in Europe. You will not find more stunning views on a golf course. The islands can also be explored by boat, with RibSafari boat rides taking you deep inside sea caves, and around the small islands that are otherwise inaccessible. If you are lucky you may even get close to the array of wildlife around the islands, like whales and puffins.
