A honeymoon trip to Iceland is made for couples who want the beginning of married life to feel like an adventure. Here, you can wake beside a glacier, walk along an almost-empty black sand beach, soak together in naturally heated waters and end the day beneath the Northern Lights or the lingering glow of the Midnight Sun.
Romance in Iceland rarely means staying in one place. One day might begin beside a waterfall and end in a secluded countryside lodge. Another could take you onto a glacier, into an ice cave or through landscapes so remote that it feels as though you have them entirely to yourselves.
At Hidden Iceland, we create private and tailor-made journeys around the people travelling with us. Whether your idea of romance is Champagne after a day of adventure, a private geothermal soak or escaping into the Icelandic wilderness together, your honeymoon can be shaped around how you want to travel.
Why choose Iceland for your honeymoon?
For couples who struggle to choose between adventure and luxury, Iceland offers both remarkably well.
You can spend the morning exploring ancient ice before returning to a beautifully designed hotel, slipping into warm geothermal water and sitting down for dinner made with some of Iceland’s finest local ingredients.
Many of Iceland’s most memorable experiences are naturally intimate too. Beyond Reykjavík, settlements quickly give way to lava fields, mountains, glaciers and empty stretches of coastline. With a private guide and a carefully planned itinerary, it is much easier to experience these places at a slower pace and away from the busiest stops.
It makes Iceland particularly well suited to couples who want their honeymoon to be less about ticking off sights and more about sharing extraordinary experiences together.
Discover waterfalls, glaciers and black sand beaches
If this is your first visit to Iceland, the South Coast is one of the places we most recommend building into your honeymoon.
Travelling east from Reykjavík brings an extraordinary variety of landscapes. Waterfalls tumble from old sea cliffs, glaciers descend between mountains and stretches of black volcanic sand meet the North Atlantic.
Places such as Skógafoss are spectacular in their own right, but some of our favourite experiences happen between the headline stops. Travelling privately gives you more freedom to linger somewhere unexpectedly beautiful, adjust the day around the weather or follow your guide somewhere you might otherwise have passed by.
Continue towards Southeast Iceland and you eventually reach Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where huge pieces of ice drift slowly across the water towards the sea. Across the road at Diamond Beach, smaller fragments are often washed back onto the volcanic shoreline.
For honeymooners, this is the kind of place where slowing down pays off.
Explore a glacier together
There are certain moments that quickly remind you Iceland is not an ordinary honeymoon destination.
Standing together on a glacier is one of them.
With the right conditions and an expert guide, you can step onto the ice and explore its ridges, crevasses and frozen formations at a pace suited to you.
For some couples, a private glacier hike might be one part of a wider journey through the South Coast. Others may want to make the experience one of the highlights of the trip, combining time on the ice with the Glacier Lagoon and several nights in Southeast Iceland.
During the colder months, naturally formed ice caves can add another dimension to the experience. These constantly changing spaces offer a chance to see Iceland’s glaciers from an entirely different perspective.
Slow things down in Iceland’s geothermal waters
A honeymoon does not need to be adventurous every hour of the day.
Iceland’s geothermal landscape has created countless opportunities to slow down, from beautifully designed destination spas to smaller pools surrounded by mountains and valleys.
For something particularly indulgent, The Retreat at Blue Lagoon combines dramatic volcanic surroundings with elegant suites, a subterranean spa and access to the Retreat Lagoon.
But the most famous option is not always the best one for every itinerary. Depending on where your journey takes you, geothermal bathing experiences can be found across Iceland.
Sometimes the perfect pool is simply the one that fits naturally into your day, giving you a few quiet hours together between adventures.
Stay somewhere you will remember
The places you stay matter on any holiday. On a honeymoon, they matter even more.
Fortunately, Iceland’s best accommodation can be every bit as memorable as the landscapes around it.
In Reykjavík, The Reykjavík EDITION offers contemporary design and a waterfront setting, making it a stylish base for the beginning or end of your trip.
For wellness and privacy, The Retreat at Blue Lagoon is an obvious choice. On the South Coast, boutique countryside properties such as Skálakot Manor bring you closer to some of southern Iceland’s most impressive scenery.
For couples prepared to venture further in search of somewhere truly extraordinary, Deplar Farm awaits. Tucked away in a secluded valley on Iceland’s remote Tröllaskagi Peninsula, this exceptional retreat combines understated luxury with the raw beauty of North Iceland. With world-class facilities, complete seclusion and vast wilderness on the doorstep, escaping the everyday here means going almost completely off the map.
We do not, however, believe that every night has to be spent in the country’s grandest hotel. The right accommodation is about atmosphere, location and how it fits into your journey.
Sometimes that means five-star city luxury. Sometimes it is a small lodge surrounded by Icelandic wilderness.
See the Northern Lights together
Few honeymoon experiences need much introduction when the Northern Lights appear.
On a clear, dark night, ribbons of green can begin almost imperceptibly before suddenly moving across the sky.
There are never guarantees when it comes to the aurora, and that is part of what makes seeing it so special.
If the Northern Lights are high on your honeymoon wish list, travelling between autumn and early spring gives you the darkness necessary to see them. September and October can be particularly appealing because there is still useful daylight for daytime adventures, while winter brings snowy landscapes and seasonal ice cave experiences.
Staying outside Reykjavík also has its advantages. At a secluded lodge away from city lights, seeing the aurora can sometimes be as simple as stepping outside together.
Or experience Iceland beneath the Midnight Sun
Not every romantic trip to Iceland needs darkness.
From late spring into summer, daylight stretches late into the evening. Around midsummer, the sun barely disappears beneath the horizon, filling the landscape with soft late-night light.
For honeymooners, that changes the rhythm of a trip entirely.
There is less pressure to rush. You can dine later, spend longer exploring or stop somewhere simply because the light looks beautiful.
Summer also opens up more of Iceland’s interior, making it the ideal season to consider a journey into the Highlands.
Escape into the Icelandic Highlands
For couples drawn to wilderness, we would encourage you to look beyond Iceland’s better-known routes.
The Highlands occupy the wild interior of the country, with rhyolite mountains, volcanic deserts, geothermal valleys and landscapes that can sometimes feel more like another planet than northern Europe.
Access is seasonal, so this is primarily a summer adventure. When conditions allow, however, the Highlands offer exactly the sense of space and remoteness many couples are hoping to find.
Depending on how adventurous you want your honeymoon to be, a journey into this part of Iceland might include hiking, private guiding, remote accommodation or even helicopter travel.
The point is not to pack every possible activity into your itinerary.
It is to have the freedom to decide which experiences matter most to the two of you.
When is the best time for a honeymoon trip to Iceland?
There is no single perfect honeymoon season in Iceland. The best time depends on the kind of experience you want.
Spring brings longer days, fewer visitors and increasingly accessible landscapes – and the return of migrating birds (including the Atlantic puffin) and up to 20 different whale species.
Summer offers the Midnight Sun, the greatest access to the Highlands and long days for exploring.
Autumn combines useful daylight with darker evenings and the start of the Northern Lights season.
Winter brings snowy landscapes, seasonal ice caves, long nights, great low light for photography, and the possibility of still seeing the aurora.
If you are not sure which season suits you, start with the experiences you care about most. Our travel experts can help shape the rest of the journey around them.
Make your Iceland honeymoon entirely your own
There is no reason your honeymoon should look like anyone else’s.
Perhaps you want a week of private adventure along the South Coast, followed by a couple of nights devoted almost entirely to spa treatments and exceptional food.
Perhaps you would rather disappear north to a secluded lodge.
Maybe you want to cross glaciers, hike through the Highlands and make the trip as adventurous as possible. Or perhaps the ideal day involves little more than a beautiful drive, a quiet geothermal pool and somewhere unforgettable to stay.
Hidden Iceland specialises in tailor-made luxury journeys across Iceland, with private guides, carefully selected accommodation and itineraries built around the people travelling rather than a predetermined schedule.
Our example journeys are exactly that – examples.
For a honeymoon, we can help you create something that feels entirely your own.
