In our opinion, the BEST way to visit the DC Plane Wreck on the south coast is by ATV (all terrain vehicle). Cross rivers, traverse sand dunes, zoom across black sand beaches and take in spectacular views, all on the way to the iconic US Navy plane wreck that crashed back in 1973.
PLEASE NOTE: This is a meet on location tour, so you will need to find your way to the base of operations yourself.
This tour is a total of 2 hours, with over an hour on the ATV and visiting the crash site itself. It is designed for first timers, but good mobility of your upper body is recommended.

The south coast of Iceland is one of the most visited parts of Iceland, but for good reason. However, the majority of your fellow travellers will stick to Route 1, ring road. Why not go a little off the beaten path and take an ATV tour to get you to the often pictured DC Plane Wreck?
The remains of the DC Plane Wreck, a US Navy cargo plane, are more remote than the guide books may have you believe. To get there on foot, you will be walking for an hour each way over unprotected terrain. Instead, skip the queue and add some adventure by jumping on the back of an ATV and be guided to the wreck via secret tunnels, fast flowing rivers, sand dunes and incredible views. Zooming across the Sólheimasandur black sand beach with the historic Eyjafjallajökull volcano on one side and the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean on the other, is something to behold indeed.
