Glacier Lagoon Ice Cave Tour Itinerary

Day 1 | Southeast Bound
Waterfalls, Black Sand Beaches & Northern Lights

After departing Reykjavík, we head straight to Seljalandsfoss waterfall, fed by the Eyjafjallajökull glacier, where, in good conditions, you can walk behind the cascading water for a unique perspective. Next, marvel at the majestic Skógafoss waterfall, a 200ft (61 m) tall spectacle where a staircase leads to breathtaking views.

Our journey continues to the iconic Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, renowned for its striking black sands and hexagonal basalt columns. Enjoy lunch at the Black Beach Restaurant before we drive through the charming village of Vík and past Vatnajökull National Park, home to Iceland’s highest peaks and glaciers.

As evening falls, we’ll search for the Northern Lights, taking advantage of the uninterrupted 360-degree views and minimal light pollution right outside our accommodation at Hótel Jökulsárlón on a clear, starry night. At the hotel, you have complimentary access to their outside hot tubs and sauna, the perfect place to relax after a day of exploring.

Day 2 | Winter wonderland
Glacier Discovery within Vatnajökull National Park

Today is all about exploring the glacier landscape of the south-east. We’ll start with a visit to the breathtaking Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, where seals can often be spotted swimming among the majestic icebergs that drift in the lagoon. They wash up on the black sands of Diamond Beach, creating a stunning sight.

Now it’s time to embark on an unforgettable ice cave adventure. Riding in their super jeeps, we reach a remote glacier area and take a short hike to a magnificent blue ice cave. Inside, we’ll walk through a 20-metre ice tunnel, emerging onto Falljökull glacier*, where our guide will lead us on a short hike to explore fascinating glacier features and capture incredible photos. After this remarkable experience, we begin making our way back to Reykjavík, the final stop of our Private Glacier Lagoon 2-day Tour, stopping at a local restaurant for a late lunch, ensuring you return to the city in time for dinner.

* The ice cave & glacier hike is not private, but with a small group operated by our local partners.
