WEST FJORDS WONDERS SELF-DRIVE TOUR

Embark on a self-dive journey through Iceland’s remote West Fjords. Explore dramatic coastlines, towering cliffs, and historic fishing villages. Marvel at the majestic Dynjandi waterfall, peer over Látrabjarg cliffs, and spot puffins, seals, and whales. This immersive six-day adventure reveals hidden gems and unforgettable experiences in one of Iceland’s most untouched regions.

The proposed itinerary spans a total of six days, though it can be tailored to your timeframe. We recommend allowing yourself additional time to fully explore this remarkable region. Arrival and departure days, along with any added days, will be meticulously planned by our Travel Experts to ensure a seamless experience. We also suggest dedicating at least one full day in Reykjavík either before or after your tour to explore the vibrant city and its surroundings.

Day 1 | Westbound Adventures
West Iceland & Hvammsvík Baths

Begin your West Fjords self-drive journey west from Reykjavík through Hvalfjörður fjord, making stops at cultural sites like Reykholt and the stunning waterfalls of Barnafoss and Hraunfossar. Discover local charm at Háafell Icelandic Goat Farm and explore hiking trails around Húsafell. Conclude the day with a soothing soak at Hvammsvík Hot Springs, where geothermal waters meet the ocean.

Day 2 | Into The Countryside
Farm Experiences & Heydalur Retreat

Embark on a scenic drive to Erpsstaðir Dairy Farm, where a guided tour unveils the secrets of Icelandic skyr, cheese, and ice cream production. Sample farm-fresh treats and enjoy the bucolic atmosphere before continuing to Heydalur Guest house. Nestled in a tranquil valley, Heydalur is the perfect escape to nature. Explore hiking trails, relax in geothermal, natural hot springs, or unwind in the on-site sauna. A delicious dinner at the guest house’s restaurant rounds off the day.

Day 3 | Highlights of Ísafjörður
Wildlife Encounters & Coastal Wonders

Start the day with breakfast at Heydalur before heading deeper into the West fjords. Visit the Arctic Fox Centre in Súðavík to learn about Iceland’s native foxes and conservation efforts. Arrive in Ísafjörður, the West fjords’ bustling hub, for a lunch break. In the afternoon, take a guided boat tour to Vigur Island, where you’ll encounter puffins, seals, and awe-inspiring coastal scenery. Return for the evening to Önundarfjörður fjord, soaking up the peaceful fjord side atmosphere.

Looking to tailor this day? Embark on a boat trip to the remote Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, where the Arctic Fox lives and is the only place in Iceland where they are completely protected. Here you’ll visit Hesteyri—a village of preserved 1900s houses still used by their owners in summer. Walk along the beach and to the church with your guide, who’ll tell you stories from the area along the way. Round off with a warming hot drink and traditional pastries before cruising back to the mainland.

Day 4 | The Call of Dynjandi
Cascading Waterfalls & Historic Relics

Journey toward the stunning Dynjandi waterfall, an icon of the West fjords, where a short hike reveals its multi-tiered waterfall. Continue along the dramatic coastline to visit the Látrabjarg cliffs, Iceland’s westernmost point and a paradise for birdwatching. Along the way, stop at the shipwreck Garðar BA 64, a striking relic of maritime history. Your day ends in the village of Patreksfjörður, where you can relax and reflect on the day’s adventures.

Finally, make your way to the enchanting Snæfellsnes Peninsula, where you’ll spend the night. Enjoy the freedom of today’s exploration and embrace the wonders of the journey at your pace.

Day 6 | Iceland in Miniature
Discover Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Explore the wonders of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, often called “Iceland in Miniature” for its diverse landscapes. Witness volcanic craters, lava fields, and the majestic Snæfellsjökull glacier. Stroll along dramatic coastlines and visit charming villages such as Arnarstapi. This captivating region promises a fitting finale to your West fjords adventure.
