Go on an exciting introductory glacier tour with our partners from Local Guide of Vatnajökull on Falljökull, one of the outlet glaciers of the vast Vatnajökull glacier. This tour is perfect for for those going on a glacier for the first time, or if you want the thrill of hiking on ice without being exposed to the elements for many hours. You will get a 4×4 transfer to the glacier and learn about the fascinating features of the ice. A glacier hike is always a highlight of any trip to Iceland!
This glacier encounter tour starts with a Super jeep transfer from the meeting location at Freysnes Gas station to the base of Falljökull, one of the outlet glaciers of the mighty Vatnajökull ice cap. Before going on the ice you will receive crampons, an ice axe and a safety briefing given by your expert glacier guide. The colours and ever changing features of the glacier are explored on this hike, with one hour on the ice learning about the geology, geography and history of the local area. This glacier hike is considered easy to moderate, with a limit of 10 years on any scheduled tour. You can expect to walk 1 to 1.5 kilometres over uneven and ascending terrain.
Be sure to bring along waterproof jackets and pants for the unpredictable Icelandic weather. You must also have strong, waterproof hiking boots that go above your ankle in order to wear the crampons (spikes) that are required on the glacier. These can also be rented on location for 1,000 ISK.
